first up in the 'guide to life: university series' is...

CAMPUS LIVING.

in my mind there is only one way to do uni right...

you MUST live on campus at some point or you are just not going to get the full experience of what uni is all about!

i love living on campus so much that this week marks the beginning of my FOURTH year living here...

i share a 'floor' with 6 other people, we each have our own bedroom and share a living area, kitchen and bathroom (that is divided into three rooms: a toilet, sink room and shower)...

below i decided to compile a list of the pros and cons of living on 'res', as we call it...

im sure you'll find the pros far outweight the cons (and that some aspects can be a pro and a con)!

PROS

-easy: you don't have to look for a house, you just apply to campus and cross your fingers they have a space for you (luckily we get straight back on, after our first year, thus why im too lazy to move off haha).

- the parties: need i say more?!? i have a couple of friends that go to uni but don't live on campus and they are never at any of the uni events, half the time they don't even know about them! campus kids make up the majority at every uni event and we all sure know how to party. add to that each different residence here has its own parties and pre drinks events - no one is ever short of somewhere to part-ay!

- housemates: this year me and 4 of my housemates decided to apply to live together. I lived with 3 of them last year and have known them since my first year here. I love these people and I love that i get to live with my friends! we got a new girl this year too and thankgod, she fits right in :)

-proximity: "wake up and look at clock. shit, only got 30mins to get to class. eh, thats ok ill get up in 15 mins." yes this does actually run through my mind quite regularly, but with only a two minute walk to the uni, it's all good!

-campus only events: the company that owns my residence just made us free breakfast! nom nom nom.

CONS

- housemates: you don't always get to pick who you live with and while sometimes this works out well and you find a new bff, i have had it backfire. in my second year of uni i was lumped in a house with a group of 4 loud, messy, annoying boys. we got on alright, but i never would have said we were friends and there were plenty of times i wished id got some different roomies.

-mess: its kind of inevitable with all the parties and everyone being busy. its pretty much only the dishwashing that actually bothers me tho... how hard is it to wash a dish after you used it (not five days later)?!?!

yes, i did clean out my closet...

or to be more accurate, i cleaned out my entire room!

wow had i held onto some junk over the years...

while im nowhere near as bad as these 'hoarders'...

i did have a mean collection of junk that should have been tossed a long way back!

having had the same bedroom in my parents house since i was 2 years old, its not surprising that i managed to collect such a variety of 'momentos'...

but it was interesting to see what i must have considered to be either important or precious whenever i last cleaned out the room...

the list includes:

- old gross and even smelly makeup (ewwwwwww!)

- this awesome self made 'bring it on' poster

- plastic bags from a family trip to dream world

- a box that my first ever watch came in (yep, just the box - not even the watch!)

i was on such a cleaning rampage that i even tore down my wardrobe posters...

check these two concert tickets for hilary duff and john mellencamp...

most had been up there since around 2006-08!

the room feels alot nicer now and i feel more organised having thrown away soooo much junk...

a job well done, i say!

last year my great uncle passed away...

he was like a grandfather to me and it was extremely sad.

but this is not a post of sadness...

it is a post of remembering times gone by and being thankful for the memories left behind...

imagining what life may have been like had you been born 20, 40, 60, 80, even 100 years earlier...

wondering what you would have done and who you would have been without the internet and iphones...

reminding you to be grateful for all you have in the here and now.

i spent the past saturday with my parents at my great uncles house (about 1.5 hours drive away)...

its like a trip back in time there...

the house almost museum like...

my parents have slowly been going through the house and its getting close to empty now but there are still so many small fixtures within the house that inspire you to think back to years gone by...

the toilet for example is seperate from the house and you have to go outside to get to it...

the oven sits in a space that leads up to a chimney, having once requiring fire for cooking...

to look at the house itself you can imagine it back in its hey-day - a day long passed.

it's hard to imagine that in another 100 years or so everything that is so new to me now will be old and antique to someone else...

and the memories that i'm making will be mostly forgetten...

trinkets and belongings left behind for others to guess the story behind.

- it doesnt bother me that i have been talking non-stop about cheer camp even though no-one else wants to hear it... i had the BEST time!

end of cheer camp with coaches neda, gerrin, john and derrick.

- i've realised i don't mind if i'll never be the best cheerleader. i'm just soooo happy to have found a sport that i love :)

- i never thought id put adds on my blog and now they are there big and bold for the world to see. i'd love to know if they bother you????? and wether you've clicked on them????

- my unique hits on this blog rose dramatically simply because i said the name tarralyn mcnitt in a post.

- i said tarralyn mcnitt again just to see which of my posts will be more popular. (dont hate me - its an experiment in tagging blog posts, not shameless plugging my blog - i swear!)

- im putting off getting a new part-time job for 2012 more and more. i just dont want to commit to anything right now.

can't wait to see what everyone else is confessing...

i am a cheerleader...

though you should know already since i have blogged about it...

i spent the last three days attending a summer holiday cheer clinic...

and i loved every second of it (well maybe not everrryyy second, stretching can hurt and tumbling is scary!)...

we had four amazing american coaches who could not have been more helpful...

for those of you who understand cheer, we learnt/practiced full-ups, full-downs, tic-tocs, baskets, motions, cradles, a little bit of tumble and more...

waking up on day two and three i was soooooooo sore, so i know i was working hard!

at twentyone years of age the days of family trips, as i have known them, are slowly coming to an end...

i'm all grown up and more often then not, i holiday on my own or with friends...

however, this past christmas/new year period i travelled with my mum and dad to spend seven days with extended family and friends (from my mum's side of the family).

leaving on christmas day...

it took us two days of driving (with an overnight stopover in sydney) to get to...

VALLA BEACH...

(about 20 minutes south of coffs harbour).

the caravan park we stayed at was... meh...

the rooms were disapointing and not particularly clean or well looked after...

first impressions count for a lot and this place did not make a good one!

however, the company of family is always a positive and we all managed to come together to enjoy our holiday regardless of the accomodation not meeting our expectations...

we spent time at the beach (with ridiculously big swell)...

went kyaking...

did some fishing...

my cousin's son and his catch

attended the caravan park karaoke night, which turned out to be my favourite night of the trip, i sang 'summer of 69' and 'khe sahn'...

took a day trip to coffs and visited the big banana...

my cousin and i

won best dressed table at the caravan park trivia night, where i also personally won a bottle of wine and card game...

ate lots of yummy meals...

swam in the pool...

and celebrated new years, at the caravan parks, beauty and the geek themed new years party!

yes, my dad did dress as a beauty - no i did not dress up!

my dad, aunty, and cousins... aka. beauty and the geeks!

it was fantastic to have seven days to spend catching up with everyone...

i can't wait to see what the next family holiday will entail/when the next family holiday may happen!

2012 marks my last year of university...

just thinking about finishing uni makes me feel old...

there's so much in the world that i want to see and do...

so many different experiences i want to have...

i don't know how i can possibly fit them all into one life time!

i want to fit so much into this year and the next...

next year i hope to get some more travel done and really tick off some tasks on life's list of must-do's...

this year i just want to take the time to really appreciate the unique experience of university and how few responsibilities i have at this time in my life...

i don't want to commit to a job that takes up too much of my time, i want to be free and have the flexibility to jump at new opportunities!

i'm generally not afraid to take on new experiences by myself...

i did travel all the way to the maldives on my own last year...

but sometimes its more fun to have someone you know there with you...

someone to laugh with in awkward situations...

to cry to when things aren't turning out quite as you hoped...

and just generally chat to as you find your way in a new environment...

so i'm asking you...

what do you do when no one you know is looking to have the same new experiences as you?

but i'm 21, not friends with any parents, and none of my close friends are interested in child care at all!

i want to go out bush and experience a jillaroo school for a week or two...

but i can't see any of my friends or family joining me for that one either!

my favourite technique of hers is the naughty step...

just a quick post to say hope you all had a lovely christmas and have a wonderful new year...

ive got a few posts coming with more details on what ive been up to for the past couple of weeks (a beach holiday!!!)...

but for now a super quick christmas recap...

i was woken early by my sister running around the house screaming "get up - it's christmas" (yes, she is 19!)...

opened presents with my mum, dad, sister and simba (our puppy... i got him one of those balls you roll around and treats drop out - he loved it!)...

had yummy scrambled eggs with spinach and mushroom for breakie...

and then started getting ready for a very early christmas lunch...

and playing with our presents!

i tried out my FIRST CHANEL MASCARA...

loves it

and checked out my new books...

i cut the moustache and glasses out of "this is not a book" and got some funky photos...

what a family! huh?!?

then we had our early christmas lunch of prawns, oysters and salads followed by rocky road icecream...

very low key and casual...

then mum, dad and I said goodbye to my sister (she had to work :( )...

got in the car and headed off on our 2 day drive to our holiday with the extended family!

now i'm back from holiday i should have some time to read up on all your christmas's...

i never thought i would have the opportunity to travel to the maldives...

i'd only ever heard of the ritzy side with the expensive resorts and knew that was out of reach...

being able to live on a tiny island with the locals and volunteer in their schools was amazing...

the trips they take us on to totally deserted islands and the nights we got to spend at one of the most amazing resort islands were unforgettable!

just my parents, my friend sarah, her mum and me...

obviously the food was excellent (it always is)...

and the company was great!

i havent gotten round to much reading this year...

but i've just downloaded the nicholas sparks book 'the best of me' onto my smart phone...

oh what a night!

a few months ago i decided to try out what is commonly known as being 'vegetarian'...

at first i didn't tell anyone...

what if i didn't stick to it?

what if i missed meat too much?

what if someone asked why i wasn't eating meat?

what if someone had a problem with my choices?

ofcourse, eventually people noticed and the one question kept rolling in...

why???

to be honest i can't even pinpoint exactly what it was that made me want to cut meat out of my diet...

maybe it was watching fish be killed in the maldives...

maybe i just thought it would help me be healthier...

maybe i wanted to save the animals...

i didn't eat much red meat before the change anyway...

this was just something i wanted to do for me - because i could!

as an avid browser of pinterest, one can't help but notice the abundance of 'thinspiration'...

that is, inspiration to be thin (or fit and healthy more accurately)...

and so i thought i would share with you here some of the things i have stumbled upon that inspire me to aim for a healthier life.

- the biggest loser -

american season 11

i LOVE this show...

and though it is not currently on tv in australia, i have taken to watching old seasons and past seasons from america...

its so inspiring to see someone who has let their health slip so considerably, put in the effort to turn it all around...

it may be unrealisitic to expect similiar results in weightloss, but if they can inspire just one person to get up and move it, then they are doing the world a huge favour...

i think its great when the australian series has its health classes and they actually teach lessons that are beneficial to not only the contenstants but also those watching at home...

i am currently about half way through watching the american season 11 that aired earlier this year and am soooo inspired by courtney and her always positive attitude towards improving her health.

now i'm interested to see what you all have to say about this one...

undressed skeleton is the tumblr of taralynn mcnitt...

it contains many before and after photos of taralynn having lost lots of weight, aswell as healthy receipes, eating plans, tips for losing weight, tips on how to eat out healthy or travel healthy and more...

i've seen many people on pinterest pin this particular photo of taralynn as inspiration...

ive also seen people comment on it and suggest that taralynn has an eating disorder and that aiming to be as thin as her is unhealthy...

i both agree and disagree with parts of this statement...

yes, she is very thin and that's not an ideal goal, people should be aiming for health rather then to be skin and bones...

however, if you go to the site and you read the advice, it is healthy advice...

there is even a section on eating disorders and how eating too little will harm your body...

i personally believe its a well put together and researched site that contains lots of useful tips for losing weight in a healty manner.

- noom -

i found noom about three weeks ago and its great...

its an app for your smart phone that allows you to log your daily food and excercise, as well as keep track of your weight...

i have the free version and find it great for reminding me to log my meals and think about what im putting into my mouth...

rather then counting exact calories like most programs expect, you give more of an estimate with noom and divide your foods into great, ok and bad foods...

obviously the aim is to eat mostly the great foods and a lil of the bad foods...

noom gives you a rating out of five each day based on how well you ate...

you can also log your weight and it will graph it for you so you can watch yourself losing the kilos...

i definately recommend it!

when travelling on airplanes it is important to take notice of the safety protocols...

with that in mind, one must always remember things they can NOT fly with...

for example...

HOLD UP!

why, yes... yes it is!

this is a real safety sheet that was on the plane on my way to brisbane...

hilarious yes?

it prompted a conversation between my friend and I about how old the sheet was and wether you could even buy furbies anymore?

(according to wikipedia, they became rare after 2007)

it also prompted us to post numerous links to furby products on each others facebook walls...

right before we had to leave the motel on the first day of competition...

we were all dressed and made up and ready to rock our pom routine...

but it wasn't quite time to catch the train yet...

welcome to my first 'guide to life' post...

ive come to the realisation that i am full of what i believe to be very useful information and what better place to share it then right here for y'all...

and so here it is...

my guide to...

BRISBANE.

(QLD, Australia)

mayhem 2011.

ive only been to brisbane a handful of times...

but ive loved it every time!

the recent AASCF cheerleading nationals were held in brisbane and so all the advice below is up to the minute!!!

ACCOMODATION

we stayed at quest apartments on mary street...

great location, easy walk to queen st and great shopping...

only a 10-15 minute walk to central station...

nice lap pool to play/relax in...

motel pool.

friendly staff who let us leave our bags in their office for the entire day after we had checked out - so convenient...

big apartments, with great closet space and nice bathrooms...

not the nicest motel ive ever stayed but id definately go back!

GETTING AROUND

oh the convience of a big city, where you can just hop on a train or hail a taxi in minutes...

the trains were all soooooo clean!

we caught the train from the airport to central station and then got a 5 min cab ride to our motel - soooo easy!

we also took the train out to boondall to the entertainment centre a couple of times and everything was always running on time :)

yeah we stunt in the street.

SHOPPING

you just can't go past queen st...

taking a break from the shops.

we hit up myer, sportsgirl, dotti, supre, toyworld, to name just a few...

and they certainly made plenty of money out of us!

THINGS TO DO

if you ever find yourself with a few hours free time in brisbane you MUST hit up south bank!!!

you might remember a few months back when i explained that i joined a cheerleading squad at the beginning of this year...

well now i can say that with that team i have competed at a NATIONAL level!

the brisbane entertainment sports centre - nationals!!!!

the AASCF CHEER AND DANCE NATIONALS 2011 were amazing!

chilling in the stands! :)

held in brisbane...

i competed in pom, level 2 cheer and level 2 group stunt...

we placed 17 out of 23 in pom which is pretty exciting...

considering we had two girls injure themselves and drop out just three weeks before the comp...

we placed 3rd in senior level 2 cheer...

with our 3rd place medals.

and im yet to find out our exact placing for senior level 2 group stunt but i know we didnt place in the top 3.

the standard of competitors at the event was outstanding...

watching the level 5 teams compete for bids to worlds was mind blowing...

and the level 6 partner stunt (which i also saw at the nsw state comp) was as impressive as ever!

in australia cheer really isnt very well known about...

but its quickly growing...

and this comp showed that australia is producing some world class cheerleaders!!!

can't wait to see the official photos and video of the day...

for now i can only share some dodgy phone quality pics!

last friday was res ball...

which means saturday was...

RECOVERY DAY!

just like last year.

i love the idea of curing a hangover by drinking more...

it really does make you feel sooooo much better...

until the next day that is...

and hanging out with all my favourite people discussing the hilarious events of the night before just makes for such a fun day...

you get to make new friends...

and joke around...

take a whole bunch of hilarious photos...

and get naked if you're really feeling it...

you can make a giant slip and slide and watch the boys pull out the craziest tricks on their way down...

or you can just sit and chill and chat and enjoy the people you're with!!!

this years res ball was soooo fun!

as always everyone looked amazing....

the drinks flowed (apart from that 15 minute period where everyone at the event got cut off for being too drunk :/ )...

there was plenty of mingling and dancing...

awards were handed out (my roomie in the sparkling metalic dress above won res queen, and two of my other roomies and my roomie from two years ago were nomiated for figjam aka fuck im good just ask me)...

and a fun time was had by all.

i'd love to be able to tell you more about it, but honestly the memories are a little shady...

so instead enjoy the photos!!!

three weeks has just flown by...
ive been on a prac placement in a primary school down home on the coast...
ofcourse mum n dad are living in the stone ages and their internet was ridiculously slow, so slow i couldn't even use blogger or comment on other blogs i read (which took five minutes to load by the way)...
the prac itself was such a great experience and really reminded why i am studying to be a teacher, i loved it!
being home was so nice too with home cooked meals, washing done for me and walks on the beach with the puppy!

the only website that WAS working for me at home was the new fave...

it must be really easy to be an artist...

i mean if i can have MY work displayed at the national gallery of australia, then how hard can it be really?

jokes.

my artwork.

this semester i am taking my second unit of arts education (how to teach art in primary school)...

part of our major assignment was to create a conceptual art piece and display it at the national gallery...

we needed to be influenced by the gallery and/or its surroundings in some way and use materials that students in a classroom could access and/or ones that were recyclable or came from nature.

making the globe - one half.

i decided to make a hanging globe that represented earth and wrap pipe cleaners around it...

the written statement/explanation that accompanied my piece goes like this:

"The idea behind the artwork began to come together after researching artist Clement Meadmore who lived as an expatriate in America from age 34. His artwork, displayed at the National Gallery of Australia, ‘Virginia’ is named after and dedicated to fellow expatriate and artist Virginia Cuppaidge (National Gallery of Australia, 2010).

Whilst standing next to this artwork I was able to look out over Lake Burley Griffin, named after its American designer, Walter Burley Griffin, and see the National Carillon and the Australian-American Memorial (Harrison, 1983). The Australian-American Memorial, which was constructed in the 1950s, was made to express gratitude for American help given to Australia in the Pacific War (Australian Government, Department of Defence, 2004). The Carillon was a gift from the British Government to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the nation’s capital (Australian Government, National Capital Authority, 2011). Gathering this knowledge of the many global influences on the environment surrounding the artwork ‘Virginia’, seemed to make the fact its creator and namesake were expats more relevant then I had previously considered.

I wanted to create an artwork that encouraged viewers to think of the world as a whole, rather than as separate continents and also about their own role within that. To do this, I eluded to Earth using a hanging spherical shape made from paper mache. I chose not to represent the continents, but instead to cover the globe in aluminum foil, which gave it a reflective property with the intention of encouraging viewers to see themselves in the piece. The wire pipe cleaners wrapped around the globe provide a visual representation of the unity of the globe and the connectedness of all of Earth’s inhabitants. The placement of the artwork between Meadmore’s piece ‘Virginia’ and Lake Burley Griffin, The National Carillon and the Australian-American Memorial, is done in the hope that people viewing the works will be prompted to think about global influences on the area as I did on my initial visit to the gallery."

i really hated this assignment in that i felt it had very little relevance for my future as a teacher...

so i made it a little more fun for myself and while i was making the paper mache ball i filled it with chocolates...

when i got home from presenting at the gallery, i grabbed a broom and i beat the artwork to a pulp, before sharing all the yummy chocolates with my friends!

my second long weekend in two weeks started on...

FRIDAY

night...

i accepted a last minute job and found myself facepainting at the australia vs malaysia friendly soccer game...

i only had to paint for the two hours leading up to the game and then i got to watch for free :)

my practice aussie flag on my arm.

im not really a soccer fan so i wasn't going to stay and watch but then I ran into some of my friends there and thought why not? it was actually kinda fun, though would've been better if it was a tad closer - australia thrashed them!!!

we were so close, but this photo makes the players look like specs.

SATURDAY

i didn't have any work so i made plans to have lunch with my old roomie E...

we went to this really cute little cafe/bar and i had the yummiest roast pumpkin n pesto pizza...

i then dragged E along with me to an art gallery, to check out a space where i have to display my art work for uni (expect a post on my artwork in the coming days)...

there were these horrible trees there that were shedding flowers and it felt like it was snowing.

after that i caught up with another friend and we made plans to go out...

we did pre-drinks...

playing kings.

and then hit the town.

there was a band and the singer had justin beiber hair - so we did too!

SUNDAY

i didn't get to bed til around 5am and then had to be at work at 12...

i hated life but got through work and headed straight back out for more drinks at the local pub down the road...

mmmmmmmm wine.

twas a lovely sunday sesh.

MONDAY

its now midday on monday and i just got out of bed :)

i need to finish up my artwork so i can present it for uni tommorow and then im heading to the movies to see footloose...

love cruisy long weekend mondays...

so what if...

- i spent a whole day last week watching charmed, jersey shore, gossip girl and glee and not doing my numerous uni assignments or cleaning tasks.

- i almost bought an erin condron planner for $25... before finding out postage to australia was $53!!!

- i searched all over the net and couldn't find any planners as awesome as erin's and still contemplated spending the $70 to get one (but ultimately decided that was RIDICULOUS!).

- i procrastinate by playing the sims social on facebook... as if i need a reason to spend more time on facebook!

- i want to punch everyone in the face at the moment. honestly, i just want to knock some sense into people! so many dumb questions from people at uni who don't listen and then feel the need to clarify what has already been explained 2 bizillion times. i'd also like to bring back manners, we are grown people at uni and yet half my classes act like children talking over the tutor and being plain rude!!!

once again i openly accept that i am less intelligent and than anyone reading this and hope that none of you have ever tried this...

50 chicken nuggets in 30 minutes

me pre-attempt.

a few weeks back while at the local pub my friend told us about how him and a work mate ate 40 nuggets each in 20 minutes...

everyone was like "woah, that's heaps"...

except me...

who was like "pffffttt, i could do that any day"...

and so i was challenged to attempt 50 nuggets in thirty mins...

tonight i went out and bought my $47 worth of nuggets (what a rip! huh?)...

and failed...

i feel sooooooooooooo sick now, after consuming...

37 chicken nuggets in 30 minutes

i was gonna film it but it was pretty damn boring, eating eating eating eating for 30 mins...

and my friends only wanted to film vomit, which thankgod there wasn't any...

worth a shot tho...

pretty funny to try!

have you ever tried to eat a teaspoon of cinnamon?

im going to assume you're not all as silly as me and the thought has never crossed your mind...

but let me tell you that it is...

IMPOSSIBLE!

when one of my friends informed me of this fact at drinks on saturday i did not believe her for a second...

so on sunday one of my other friends and I gave it a shot...

let me tell you it was horrible!!!

it sticks to your teeth, your gums, your mouth dries up and there is nothing you can do...

its an effort to even be able to spit it out and having a sip of water isn't much help at all!

thinking we were going to ace the challenge, we filmed our attempt to prove to our friends how easy this challenge is...

instead its just us with lots of powder in our mouths and no idea what to do next...

last night i finally sat down to watch the 2009 movie/documentary 'the cove'...

the movie is all about the mistreatment of dolphins in japan...

you might rememeber back in 2007 when isobel lucas and hayden panetierre where involved with a group of surfers that staged a protest in the cove...

the capture of dolphins to be kept in captivity is disturbing, especially when you consider the intelligence of dolphins...

and even more disturbing, upsetting and unthinkable is the slaughter of them...

its horrific!!!

add to that the thought of innocent children being forced to eat the meat, with its insanely high mercury levels...

its terrible!

when i was younger i went to sea world and got to get in the pool with the dolphins and feed, pat and play with them...

i had a blast and since then had always said that when i was old enough i would swim with them...

but im crossing it off my list of things to do...

i can't support dolphins in captivity and when i really think about it, how horrible for them to have to drag thousands of people around their tiny enclosures every year!

after months and months and months of waiting and wanting, i finally took the plunge...

and got myself a smart phone...

believe or not i opted against the iphone 4...

i've never been an apple user and the android phones are so much cheaper...

so i went with the samsung galaxy s2...

and im loving it.

in particular i am so happy that i know have a camera with me every where i go...

and i downloaded a couple of cool editing apps so i can play with the pictures take...

so far, i haven't snapped anything particularly exciting, i've just been playing around...

love this effect.

first day of spring :)

and in the end i didn't use my $5er challenge money to buy this so i still get to pick something up with that...

the next highest vote in my poll went to make up, so i'll be making a visit to a beauty department very soon.

7. For the next 100 days, have a good laugh at least once a day: get one of those calendars that has a different joke for every day of the year, or stop by a web site that features your favorite cartoons.

10. Stop complaining for the next 100 days. A couple of years back, Will Bowen gave a purple rubber bracelet to each person in his congregation to remind them to stop complaining. “Negative talk produces negative thoughts; negative thoughts produce negative results”, says Bowen. For the next 100 days, whenever you catch yourself complaining about anything, stop yourself.

this is one i'm really keen to try out...

i have a habit of complaining about, well, pretty much everything, even if it doesn't actually bother me...

so now i'm going to actively try and stop and hopefully after the 100 days i won't even have to remind myself to stop being so negative!

37. Create a list of 10 healthy, easy to fix breakfast meals.

* mushroom omelette

* overnight oats

* berries with yoghurt

* peanut butter toast

* porridge

* fresh fruit

*fruit puree

* museli

* promite toast

* smoothies

56. For the next 100 days, practice active listening. When someone is talking to you, remain focused on what they’re saying, instead of rehearsing in your head what you’re going to say next. Paraphrase what you think you heard them say to make sure that you haven’t misinterpreted them, and encourage them to elaborate on any points you’re still not clear about.

improving life 2011.

whilst 'stumbling' around the web i came across a webpage listing "60 small ways to improve your life in 100 days" and am now setting out to complete them all...

i have created a page to record where i'm up to with this challenge...

the dates to be aware of are:

starting date: 25th August 2011

completion date: 3rd December 2011

you can find all the details 'here'.

i am tweaking it a tad, by starting things at different points, its too hard to remember everything from day one.

here are some of the things i've done to get started...

1. Create a “100 Days to Conquer Clutter Calendar” by penciling in one group of items you plan to declutter every day, for the next 100 days.

living on campus in a small little room i couldn't think of 100 groups of items to declutter and so i tweaked a little (as i tend to do with any type of challenge!) and decided to choose one group per week (14 weeks)...

groups to declutter include; makeup, magazines, workout clothes, weekend work bag, shelves, top of wardrobe, side of wardrobe, hanging wardrobe, uni work, computer files, food locker, underwear, shoes and handbag.

2. Live by the mantra: a place for everything and everything in its place. For the next 100 days follow these four rules to keep your house in order:

i wrote them down and stuck them inside my wardrobe.

this is the reason i need to do a challenge like this... half laundry/half clean clothes on the floor of my room.

8. Choose a book that requires effort and concentration and read a little of it every day, so that you read it from cover to cover in 100 days.

i saw this book 'half the sky' on oprah, the day before i decided to start this challenge and think it fits perfectly...

the book is about turning oppression into opportunity for women, and i will tell you more about it once i have read it.

note: i havent actually got the book yet, i bought it on ebay.

33. Choose one food that constantly sabotages your efforts to eat healthier—whether it’s the decadent cheesecake from the bakery around the corner, deep-dish pizza, or your favorite potato chips—and go cold turkey for the next 100 days.

no more twisites - my favourite go-to snack and hangover cure!

for my birthday back in april some of my friends got me a david jones voucher so that i could buy some OPI shatter polish...

waiting for the store to get it in was ridiculous, they could never tell me when it was coming in and they took my number ages ago and said they'd call when they next had it but i never heard from them...

on friday i finally found shatter polish in stock at the store...

unfortunately there was no black, but it was ok, i grabbed the navy shatter instead...

i decided a silvery colour would look best underneath so i grabbed the 'i vant to be a-lone star' polish...

and as i was walking away i spotted the 'pink flamenco' colour and just had to have it...

the $5er challenge involves putting aside EVERY $5 note you receive for a month...

the idea for the challenge came from carly a while back, and i added it straight to my day zero list to be completed at a later date...

that time has finally come and for the month of august i have put all $5 notes that have come into my possession, into a secret hiding place (dun dun dun!!!)...

i have currently managed to save...

another year, another opportunity to party like its 1999.

E and me.

on wednesday night, i attended my university's annual 'back to school' party...

which involves dusting off the old school uniform for a night of drunken fun...

being my third year at this event (you can read about my first year here) i didn't devote too much time to finding an outfit, and actually managed to pull the whole thing together with pieces i had lying around in my cupboard...

i even managed to incorporate a cheerleading bow into my outfit, it was the perfect accessory!

of course on the one night of the year you guarantee a million girls are wearing white shirts it was bucketing down rain...

the walk from campus to the pub was wet, wet, wet and i'm suprised i didn't end up face down in the mud...

there was a half hour wait to get inside, but luckily i have friends who know people and the manager was waiting for us outside to let us straight in...

a few hours of dancing later it was time to head home...

but not without a stop in at mcdonalds first for a drunken feed!

this post should have been posted in april but i was on hiatus and i just had to share it with you all.

my twenty-first birthday

i turned 21 on April 28th 2011...

the night before was another girl on my residence's birthday and so i grabbed the opportunity to get my own birthday celebrations started early...

the theme my friend had chosen was jersey shore and i was wayyyy excited about that as i love the show...

everyone had so much fun getting into the theme...

and i had an absolute blast going out, i was in a fantastic mood alllll night, happily letting everyone know at midnight that it was now my 21st birthday!!!

the next day my good friend and ex-roomie E took me out to lunch,

we had a good gossip about everything that had gone down the night before and started getting excited for my party that was in two days!

i began planning my party about a year before...

i'd never really had a party (only a few lil dinners or sleepovers here and there when i was younger), so my parents had always promised to let me throw a big 21st...

choosing a theme took forever...

in the end it was a toss up between musicals (which i love) and a horror theme...

i decided on horror because i thought there were more costumes people could choose from and i hoped it was a theme that my guy friends could get into...

and so my 21st 'spooktacular' was born.

on the night i couldn't have been happier or more excited...

the room i'd selected at a club in the city, was all done up with spooky decorations, such as a spider web, skeletons, light-up skulls and more...

i was dressed up as 'magenta' from 'the rocky horror show'...
my extended family had traveled from all over australia to attend...

and all my family put enormous amounts of effort into their costumes...

the drinks were flowing...

all my favourite friends were there...

the dance floor absolutely went off, my crazy family showed my friends how to bust a move...

my dad made a cute lil speech...

the bar tab lasted til almost the very end of the party...

my cheer friends tried to a fly a very drunk me...

a very drunk me also did the splits (i paid for that for days afterward, haha, im not really that flexy)...

yeah i can't even get close to this sober.

my cake was the most amazing thing i have ever seen ...

love all the photos in the background from when i was little that mum and my sis put together :)

a couple weeks back a friend and i went to see the movie 'bad teacher'...

the movie was average, with a few funny parts here and there, but nothing that really made me laugh my ass off...

but i'm not here to do a review, this story is about what happened BEFORE i sat down in the less then comfortable cinema seat...

so we get to the cinema, line up, you know the usual...

and then i walk up to order my ticket..

"one for bad teacher, a frozen coke and a packet of twisties please"...

guy at the counter hits a few buttons on the screen and then looks up at me...

"can i see some i.d. please?"...

and hand him my licence, not even questioning why he needs to see it...

he takes a look and blushes a little..

"oh, i'm really sorry... honestly, it's a compliment that you look young"...

HOLD UP!

it hits me...

he's asked to see my i.d. because its a M15+ movie and he didn't think i looked old enough to get in...

i don't look close to 15...

im twenty one...

so as it turned out thursday night wasn't actually that great...

i did enjoy catching up with one of my favourite people, E...

E and i lived together for my first two years of uni...

and still live on the same residence, tho we don't get to spend near as much time together now.

we started the night with a few drinks with friends on campus...

before we headed to a small cocktail bar in town for a chance to chat and catch up on each other's lives...

i enjoyed visiting a much classier venue then i usually do, and having the opportunity to drink the 'toblerone' cocktail - so yummy!

from there we moved around to a few other bars, finding each to be atleast half empty and not all that exciting...

so yeah overall, average night but great company!

i had to nanny the next day, looking after a two year old...

we entertained ourselves taking photos of our friends...

on average i spend about 14 hours a week with these two...

the holiday is over and oweek is here once again...

semester two orientation week is never as fun or exciting as the big oweek at the start of the year, but its still a good excuse to go out on a week night!

i havent got that into sem2 oweek this time round...

not like last year.

MONDAY

my sister and i drove to meet up halfway between our two towns, so we could catch up after my holiday and so i could return her camera (i accidently left my camera at home before heading overseas and thankfully she lent me hers!)...

we went and had coffee and cake at a cute lil cafe, caught up on each others goss and i gave her the pressies i'd picked up for her overseas...

then we headed over to the shops to find some trackies for my sister, as she was wearing a dress and it was freezing...

we ended up walking around some furniture and electronic stores dreaming about all the things we will buy when we have our own homes...

then we grabbed some lunch (the most delicious vegetarian lasagne - nom nom!)...

and went for a game of ten pin bowling...

hate to admit i lost the game :(

that night was golf pro's and tennis hoes night at the local pub...

i chose not to dress up as that is probably my least favourite theme ever!

my duty free vodka certainly came in handy and im sure i had a great time, tho i wish i could remember a tad more of it.

TUESDAY

the hangover hit...

so i stayed in bed til about midday before heading up to the campus cafe for a hangover feed and to catch up on all the goss from the night before with friends :)

tuesday night was karaoke in town...

and i do LOVE karaoke, but i was exhausted and still feeling my hangover a tad so opted not to attend this one.

WEDNESDAY

i had work (nannying) all day...

and then cheer practice that night...

i was sooo keen to go out but i didnt get home from cheer til 10:30 and it was raining so i lost my motivation to do anything and went to bed instead.

THURSDAY

which brings us to today...

so far ive done very little, mainly because its raining and i reallly need to clean my room up but im trying to avoid it.

im heading out tonight into town...

ill be sure to take my camera, since ive been sooo slack with photos so far this week.

one leg - scale. im in the green pants backing the stunt.

about half way through last year i was face painting at my uni's open day when i saw a group of cheerleaders walking around...
i went home and googled them straight away.

ive wanted to be a cheerleader since i first saw bring it on...

my sister, cousin and i used to run around the backyard making up dances and creating our own little pyramids, often accidently dropping my sister - oops!
after googling the cheerleaders i had seen walking around i decided to go in and give it a go...
i loved it instantly!
and so at the start of this year i officially joined a cheerleading squad.

mayhem cheerleaders.

we are a competitive cheerleading squad...
which means we lift people, we throw them in the air, we dance and we tumble (think flips and the like)...
we don't cheer for a football team or anything like that...
we train three days a week - 4.5 hours...
we had our first comp in june but i missed it as it was on the day i flew out to the maldives...
our next comp is in just over a month and i cannot wait!

having just returned from a month long holiday on a tropical island, i found myself disapointed with my photos...

they just didn't quite capture the moment as vividly as i remembered it...

and so began my foray into editing.

i've been a fan of hairspray since the movie (starring john travolta) was released...

im yet to see the original movie though - i just can't find it anywhere...

i bought the soundtrack for hairspray before i even saw the movie and listened to it on repeat for weeeeeeks as i studied for my HSC.

i was loving every second of it!

jack chambers of australian so you think you can dance fame shined in the role of link larkin...

as did fellow so you think you can dance alumni heath keating in his role as one of the nicest kids in town...

and the girl who played tracey, jaz flowers, was just fantastic, she absolutely nailed the part!

i strongly recommend that anyone with the chance to go see this musical, go for it!

after countless hours spent in transit i am finally back on australian soil...

we left thinadhoo early on monday...

took a twenty minute speed boat ride to the airport...

got an hour plane to the maldives capital, male...

waited 11 hours in male..

got a 4 hour flight to singapore...

waited 2 hours...

got a 8 hour flight to sydney...

got a 3 hour bus to canberra...

went straight to bed and quickly fell into the deepest sleep...

what a trip!!!

im slowly trying to adapt back into normality...

ive come home to the coast for a few days to try and delay the return to absolute normality...

took simba dog for a walk on the beach today - even if it is freezing here and i had to wear a jumper, in contrast to the maldives boiling hot temps that had me sweating in my swimwear!

i think its already time to start planning the next holiday!

perhaps start working towards an endless summer???

three weeks in the maldives has given me plenty of time to think, and reflect on life...

who i am at home, who i am here and who i want to be when i return...

its been a great opportunity to determine what's really important to me and which areas of my life i want to put more focus into...

and so i don't forget all these realisations on return to australia, i have decided to share them here.

my tropical island resolutions

- sleep less : do more!

simple: if i sleep less i have more time to get shit done.

so im going to try and start getting out of bed as soon as i wake up, instead of snoozing for hours and wasting half the day.

i also want to start a to-do list, so that everything i want and need to do is easy to remember and hopefully crossing things off will also inspire me to do more with my day.

- eat healthier

omg. carb overload in the maldives! which would be fine except its all refined, white carbs such as papadums, chappati bread and white rice.

when i get home i want veggies!!!!!!!!!

and i just want to try to be better with my diet in general, before i came here i was starting to experiment with lots of vegan recipes so i want to get back into that on my return.

- move it.

im so keen to get back into cheerleading when i get home...

i want to work really hard on my flexibility and finally get the splits (im a way off it yet)...

when i get back to australia i also get to go 'home,home' for a week and while im there i want to go walking/running on the beach everyday with my simba dog.

- entertaining.

ive had time here to catch up on alot of my fave blogs and ive been really inspired to get into entertaining...

i want to hold theme dinner parties...

if only i had a house or apartment to do this in...

but regardless i want to try and hold a few more events for my friends...

im currently thinking a potato dinner party is a good starting point - stay tuned!

the maldives. week 1 & 2.

for those of you that don't follow me on twitter or dont pay attention to my tweets lol

i am currently in the maldives.

on the island of thinadhoo.

i am here with a group of 16 australians working as volunteers for antipodeans abroad in one of the local primary schools and helping to teach english to some parents,

we were also meant to be teaching swimming but there are too many kids sick from school with wild fever so we are not able to.

the first week we arrived we didn't do any teaching due to the wild fever closing down the whole school,

instead we got to relax, snorkel, swim, enjoy the warm temps and crystal clear water,

we went camping on an uninhabited island about a 15 minute boat ride from thinadhoo,

it was covered in crabs which was i found kinda creepy but we had some crab races so in the end i even held one (i will admit it's claws had been pulled off lol).

the second week we started helping out at the school,

i am working with one of the practical art teachers athifa,

i taught a lesson to grade 6 about line drawing using a boomerang image and some aboriginal symbols, the kids really enjoyed it.

they are really cute kids and are so excited to meet all of us australians,

they all want to get our signitures and email adresses and have millions of questions.

all the volunteers have bought books with them to donate to the school, and stickers to give to the children, which they absolutely love.

on our second weekend we got to go and stay at a close by resort called robinson.

one word description: heaven.

wow.

champagne on arrival.

we got to stay there for very cheap as the people who look after us on thinadhoo know alot of people,

there was a huge buffet for breakfast and lunch which meant access to all the foods we have been missing on thinadhoo (basically we eat tuna in every way possible - pasta, rice, curry).

there was an amazing fresh water pool which i spent plenty of time in, it had a swim up bar so i may have indulged in a pina colada (you can't drink alcohol on thinadhoo either as they are muslim).

and a black and white party that involved lotssssssss of dancing.

i didnt bring any dressy clothes with me so short shorts and a white shirt was all i could muster.

we've been back from robinson for a few days now and we all miss it.

so we are going back for two nights at the rend of our trip (we have another two weeks left).

note: yes i am back after a few month hiatus. very excited to be here. lets see how long it lasts this time!

day 23 - 15 facts about you.

i can see the finish line for the challenge in sight - yipee! it hasnt been as enjoyable as i may have hoped it would be... ill be glad when i can resume normal blogging!

1. im turning 21 this year... and im veryyyyyy excited about it because im going to have a part-ay!

2. i HATE tomatoes. possibly more then anything else in the world. feed it to me and die!

3. my favourite numbers are 3 and 13... when given an option to pick a number i will always choose the option with a 3 in it whether that be 31 or 63, the best numbers include a 3!

4. i love pink. yes its totally cliche to be a girl and like pink - but i do anyway.

5. i play the piano. had lessons from the age of 5 till i was 16. still play whenever i come home and am currently learning to play 'when i look at you' by miley cyrus from the movie 'the last song'.

6. my first job was as a waitress/cleaner at a small takeaway, i lasted a year before getting a job at womens clothing store rockmans, where i lasted another year before working at target, which also only lasted a year before i became a nanny for a year and then i worked in a toy store for 6 months. my current jobs are part time nannying which i have done for about 6 months, after school care worker which i have also done for about 6 months and kids party assistant (face paints, balloon modelling) which i have done for about 18 months, making it my longest lasting job :)

7. im not religious.

8. i was cast in a television commercial in 2008... it was all very exciting, with makeup on set and catering and 2 hours work for a 3 second snippet.

9. i can recite pretty much every word of the movies bring it on, she's the man, perfect man, centre stage, the lizzie mcguire movie and she's all that.

10. im sarcastic.... alot. i dont think it comes across on my blog but basically every second comment out of my mouth is sarcastic. ask me a question and ill usually reply 'no' even if i mean 'yes'. is it annoying for other people? yep. will i stop? nope.

i got a new billabong wallet just before christmas...

my old wallet was falling to pieces and all my coins kept spilling into the bottom of my bag or onto the floor as i walked...

love my new wallet, its brown and has loads of space for cards and money and coins.

day 13 - favourite musician and why?

ask me 5 years ago i wouldve said hilary duff no doubts about it....

i was a huge fan of her acting and then when she released an album - ohmeohmy - loved it!

loved hil's brunette look.

then there is all time favourite britney spears...

no matter what mistakes she's made, she will always be the queen of pop in my mind...

she was so sweet.

i also love love love john mellencamps music...

yes he's old and so is his music but i grew up listening to his stuff and cant help but love it...

his lyrics are great, so much fun to sing along to...

and then when he came to Australia in 2008 i just could not miss it, so i took my dad along with me and it was an amazing concert - so much energy for a man getting on in years (and the support was sheryl crowe- bonus!).

can you believe he is dating meg ryan? wtf???

so once again i probably could have just taken a photo of my makeup bag and been done with it, but its messy and unorganised and as im learning as i go through 30 days (well to be honest i already knew) im lazy!
